The soular grooves show was a blast this evening. As usual, it's best for us to let the music do the talking! In any event, DJ Sun is a gracious and inspired host - a real pillar of the musical community in this city. Big thanks to the whole SG family. We'll put mp3s of the live performances up in our music section ASAP.

We had a really great time playing at Borders! The folks who work there are really nice, and the crowd was into what we had to say. Good deal. Our CDs will be available for sale there starting today, and you can even check it out on one of the listening stations. Thanks to everybody who came out!

We've been getting some great shout-outs today for our CD release at cactus! Jerry from Tru Sol was talking it up on his mailing list today (along with our KPFT appearance tomorrow night on Soular Grooves). We had a lot of fun at the 12 Spot last night and met some really interesting folks. Thanks to everybody who came out and hung with us at the coolest looking bar downtown. We're back there in 2 weeks (10.9), and I'm told that if the weather is nice, we'll open up the big front doors and play right out into the street. (Maybe that'll attract some of the folks from singles night over at Wasabi?)

Hmm ... our webstats show that we got 0 hits this past Sunday - compared to an average of 427 hits a day. I assume that means the site was "down" that day. Someone else told me that they got an email bounce as well. So if you sent us something on Sunday, please send it again! :)

New performance added to our showdates this week - we'll be playing live on KPFT this coming Saturday night (9.27) at 10pm on the Soular Grooves radio show with DJ Sun! Tune in and hear Drop Trio play live on the most listened to groove & acid jazz radio show in Houston.

We finally sold out of discs over at CD Baby! They really do help us reach folks we never would otherwise - our CD Baby discs have sold in Pennsylvania, California, San Antonio, etc. The latest sale we made through them was from a Tower Records customer (they've got a distribution deal together) in Kingsburg, CA. So I guess you could say that we just made our first major record store sale.

So I went over to the Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend, and it was a blast. I got a chance to see Soulive from the front row. They were totally on, and Neal Evans was just out of this world. There were tons of other good acts too - too many to mention. I also had the privilege of seeing LBP knock down a great show at Tambaleo on Saturday night. A great time overall.

Tonight at Brasil we've got Nino on Bass (Marc is off galavanting around Seattle, and en route to a LBP show in Austin tomorrow). It's our first time at Brasil in almost 2 months! We're psyched to be back home, and we've got some plans up our sleeves to be there a little more often - stay tuned for details. In any event, swing by tonight for a great show!

Mandy Smith's CD release last night was excellent. There was a good crowd, and she has a way of communicating with an audience that is totally engaging and mystifying. Mandy rocked out on keys (go Mandy!) and she was joined by a killer band including Paul (of Tody & The Falcon) on drums, Robert Smalls of D.R.U.M. on percussion, and Philip Tague (also of Rumblecat) on guitar (plus Lisa and Melissa on guitar & bass, respective, neither of whom I've met). It was a fantastic show - kudos to them.

I have it on good authority that Drop Trio will be joined tomorrow night at Brasil by none other than Funkafangez, the funkiest damn guitar player in town. If you know Funkafangez, you know not to miss this. If you don't, come by and see him for yourself. We'll also have our pal Nino on bass, so there's no telling where we might go ...

Hey, if you're looking for something good to do tonight, go by the Hard Rock Cafe downtown - it's the CD release party for our good friend Mandy Smith. I've got the CD, and I can recommend it highly - American Roots Rock. Mandy is a fellow collaborator of Motherland Entertainment and she puts on one hell of a show.

Drop Trio hit the studio last night for a secret recording project. Can't tell you much about it yet, but suffice it to say that it was "destined to happen sooner or later".
Going over to sugarhill is always a pleasure. We have stickers now, so we were finally able join the upper eschelon of Houston musicians and decorate the door of studio B (photo from Dan Workman's site).

Just got done transitioning our old news postings to this blog - thus the archive links to the right. We didn't usually post news but once or twice a month, so there's not much there. It's fun looking back on the old news, though ... like back in January, talking about unveiling a new song called "Invisible Pants", or in February taking about having a guy named Marc Reczek sit in with us at Brasil. What a gorgeous day! Nothing better than to top it off with a night at the Last Concert Cafe, enjoying the cooler September weather in Houston's finest outdoor venue. Really looking forward to it. Saltpeter starts at 9, then Drop Trio continues from 10 - 11:15, then Little Brother Project plays on into the night. Ian may sit in with LBP as well, if the mood is right. :)

Last night at Twelve Spot was our first gig in a while with Nino "Patato" Batista sitting in - we had a great time. I guess playing in Drop Trio is kind of like riding a bicycle. (Why, because you need to wear a helmet?) It was nice to pull out a couple of the tunes that we had semi-retired after Marc came on in April, like Spyglass and the Counting song. We will be doing a few more shows with Nino in the near future, so stay tuned.

I was over at Cactus a day or two ago and bumped into Quinn, the owner. We were chatting about our in-store performance and CD release that'll be there on the 28th of this month. The deal is sealed - we're even going to have free beer! I don't think you can beat that with a stick.

Just got a new flyer for the "Fire and Ice" show we're doing with Dubtex, DJ Suma and DJ Swift on October 18th. Man, Lion808 (Rick) is almost as good a designer as he is a drummer, and that's saying a lot. And if you've never heard this guy beat box, man, you are missing out. For just $5, this show should blow the roof off that warehouse. They're having graffitti artists, ice sculpture, the whole nine yards.

We've got 2 shows this week - the regular every-other Thursday The Twelve Spot, and more importantly, our big show with Little Brother Project and Saltpeter on Saturday at Last Concert Cafe. This week's thursday spot will feature an appearance by former Drop bassist Nino Batista, and probably the usual cast of luminaries from the Houston Music Scene. And Saturday will be great - Jude from Saltpeter (another former band of Nino's, incidentally) just emailed me to say they're getting excited for Saturday's show as well. Nothing like a nice evening at LCC to take your mind off of everything else, right? Mmm, frozen Sangria.
Also, FYI, Plump's web site is now back operational again, and they've even got some new music downloads, so get over there and check 'em out - www.plumpsounds.com. They're playing Friday night at Rhythm Room, I hope to be able to make it over to that. These guys have some new material they're working up - one tune in particular called "The Voyage" - that is really great. If you haven't heard 'em in a while, do your best to get out there.

We just arrived home from a mini-tour in Dallas and Lubbock, and on the way back we decided to start keeping a Drop Trio blog. It'll be a place to muse about our band experiences, on the road and in town ... a place to keep in touch with friends and fans in a little bit more personal way than the weekly "we're playing here, come see us!" thing. So here it is. :)
We had a great time on the road this weekend. On Friday we headed up north to Dallas for a gig at the Elbow Room with a band called Swirve. I can declare with full confidence that Chris Curiel (the front man for Swirve) is not only one of the most talented musicians I've met in a while, he is also one of the nicest guys. They really went out of their way to help us land a gig up there - he even helped us carry in our gear. If only the music world was full of people like Chris.
Swirve (I don't know where the name comes from, but I'm pretty sure this is not it) is an experimental duo consisting of trumpet and drums, and while that sounds strange, it's actually really accessible music; he uses samplers and pitch changers to approximate the sound of a whole band, and his musical sensibilities are really engaging. We're looking forward to doing a gig with them at Super Happy Fun Land on October 10 (the 10.10 full moon bi-polar jazz show w/ TDU, Sketchy and Swirve).
Elbow Room was a cool venue, and a couple folks actually saw our posting on Craigslist Dallas and came out. They made our night - standing in front, cheering, taking pictures. So overall, a very friendly first experience in Dallas. The recording also came out great, we'll post it ASAP.
After a stay in a questionable motel in Weatherford, and a very welcoming breakfast at the local Wafflehouse, we burned rubber out to Lubbock for a show at Klusoz. The crowd wasn't quite as massive as we were hoping for a home game weekend, but it was still a good show; Jay Reichard from Hubstuff magazine came out for it, and hopefully he'll have a thing or two to say about it in next week's issue! Marc and Ian sat in w/ Plump in their set, and all was well. Speaking of incredibly nice musicians, you won't find anybody nicer than Plump - these guys are hospitable, generous and fun, and we play with 'em every chance we get.
Our accomodations in Post after the show were modest - probably a 3 on the OM Trio Motel Rating Guide scale. We were on the road by 8:30 am Sunday morning (an amazing feat after our 30 minute venture in the wrong direction out of Lubbock ... thanks Ian, Mr. complete lack of directional sense).
On the marathon drive home, Mike, our resident army soldier, was busy annihilating butterflies with the van windsheild, and Marc (our resident metrosexual bass player) was busy reading GQ. It was Marc's birthday, so we treated him to lunch at CiCi's pizza. It was reported to be the most significant break in his healthy diet in years.
